▶ CHARACTER
NAME: Yuri Lowell
CANON: Tales of Vesperia
CANON POINT: End of Act II, when Yuri falls from Zaude
AGE: 21
BACKGROUND: https://aselia.fandom.com/wiki/Yuri_Lowell#History
PERSONALITY: Yuri's outlook on life has been shaped by the vast social inequality he experienced as a subject of the Empire. An orphan, he grew up in the lower quarter of the capital city, raised on the kindness of the people around him. As he grew older, he became keenly aware of the difference between the haves and the have-nots, that the nobility would always look down on and keep the poor under their heel, while the wealthy would flourish under the Empire's prosperity. Although he had a brief three-month stint as an Imperial Knight alongside his best friend Flynn, both wondering if they could make a difference from the inside, Yuri soon became disillusioned and took to his life in the Lower Quarter once more, this time picking fights with tax collectors and frequently making his way in and out of jail for various minor infractions. What begins his journey is his quest to retrieve the lower quarter's stolen source of water, the aque blastia, even if it means travelling across the world and deepening his life of crime to do so.
In the same vein, much of Yuri's life has been spent -- and his role in the story is -- devoted to protecting others, taking care of them, and helping them grow as individuals. He facilitates Estelle's escape from the castle so she could experience freedom, see the outside world, and learn to take charge of her own destiny; he supports Karol to have more confidence and courage, always behaving as though Karol is the "Captain" until it really happens, helping him find his resolve as the leader of the guild; he helps Raven take a new lease on life when he'd been prepared to give up on living, and so on. He gives everyone in the group a place to belong, and while he isn't vocal about it, he's guided and supported all of them in various ways. In general he extends the same kindness to the poor and downtrodden he comes across, all the while keeping up a front of indifference so others can't see how much he truly cares for them.
The conviction with which Yuri seeks to protect others and follow his own strong sense of justice often descends into recklessness, much to the chagrin of Flynn, who admonishes him out of worry that he'll go too far, while taking too much of the burden on his own shoulders. When it's clear justice from within the Empire can't stop their crimes, he murders the corrupt Imperial officials Ragou and Cumore so no one else needs to suffer at their hands, but keeps it a secret from the party. He even hides his good actions, too, letting Flynn take the credit for his positive accomplishments like returning the aque blastia, because he sees elevating Flynn's career to become a world leader as more important than a shadowy criminal like him receiving praise.
Eventually the rest of the group recognise Yuri's secretive lone wolf tendencies for what they are, and Yuri is finally forced to confront the secrets he'd hidden for so long-- the double murder, and later, his attempt to leave to kill Estelle alone when she's being used by Alexei. The party are able to talk him out of carrying so much on his own shoulders, and he finally begins to accept he can trust them instead of keeping his thoughts and feelings to himself. Even so, he carries on refusing to see himself as Flynn's equal because of his crimes, insisting that someone like him could never be worthy to stand at Flynn's side. Even so, they truly care about each other as friends and rivals, and often cooperate using their relative strengths to meet the same goals. At one point in the game, Yuri mentions the only person he can truly trust besides himself is Flynn, the only person he truly sees as an equal.
Because of his experiences, Yuri has a dark, sardonic outlook on the world, with a sarcastic sense of humour and a cutting remark ever at the ready. Often, this is used to bait people he disagrees with -- like Flynn or other loyal servants of the Empire, or even just to tease fellow party members. He's called out repeatedly by Estelle and others for not being particularly good at expressing his feelings, and often uses sarcasm and denial as just a way to hide.
Regardless of the polarising opinions Yuri elicits from people around him, he has indomitable charisma that draws grudging respect from both friends and enemies alike. This leads him to be compared to a young Don Whitehorse, the immensely respected head of the Guild Union, and he even earns the Don's respect to the point he becomes his second when the Don chooses to commit suicide.
Finally, Yuri is something of a blood knight. Although he won't admit it if pointed out, like Judith, he loves a good battle. The bigger the challenge, the better.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Yuri's list of artes is here. His bodhi blastia enhances his natural ability with swords and axes, allowing him to use powerful attacks. His combat style is a mixture of what he learned while a member of the Imperial Knights, with his own style thrown in, which means flashy punches and kicks thrown in with regular swordplay, giving him a scrappy, fast and aggressive style.
Although a powerful physical attacker, he doesn't know any offensive magic or healing artes.
INVENTORY: Second Star katana, bodhi blastia, and his doggy sidekick, Repede.
MOONBLESSING: Sanguis
